Christopher Buckley Endorses Obama
Would the late William F Buckley Jr. be rolling over in his grave at the news of his son Christopher Buckley endorsing Barak Obama? I don't think so, but Christopher Buckley has resigned from the conservative magazine, National Review, that his father founded.
In a Huffington Post article by Jason Linkins, the young Buckley is quoted as saying this about the state of the conservative movement;
"I no longer have any clear idea what, exactly, the modern conservative movement stands for. Eight years of "conservative" government has brought us a doubled national debt, ruinous expansion of entitlement programs, bridges to nowhere, poster boy Jack Abramoff and an ill-premised, ill-waged war conducted by politicians of breathtaking arrogance."
What I find interesting about this is the fact that he left the magazine over his endorsement of Obama, and that they were quick to accept his resignation. It reminds me...

Why Christopher Buckley And His Defenders Are Wrong
Christopher Buckley, son of William F. Buckley Jr. and noted author and essayist, has as perhaps many of you know endorsed Barack Obama. He's also left National Review, the magazine his father founded. He has many conservative critics, of course; and some defenders, including the columnist Kathleen Parker in today's Washington Post.
I've agreed with Ms. Parker a lot in the past; but not on this. Here, she's dead wrong.
She's wrong, for example, to suggest that there was a "tsunami" of anger and opposition to Buckley among the NR community, and wrong to suggest in any way that Buckley was run out of NR in a fit of pique by the magazine's current stewards, as Rich Lowry has clearly stated in The Corner.
But here's the larger point. Did you notice Ms. Parker's defense of Christopher Buckley's argument as to WHY a...

BUCKLEY: FATHER & SON
How many here remember, William F. Buckley, Jr.? I do. This guy was a prominent conservative spokesman for thirty years, and then some prior to his death in early 2008. Founder of the very conservative, right-wing
NATIONAL REVIEW magazine, noted author, and television host come to mind as I mention his achievements.
As an orator he, was hypnotizing. Arched eye brows, upon making a point, and the split second tongue expose upon winning a point. The Rattler awaiting his prey, and the snake quickly uses what would be a quick tongue to end it all. He was perfect. He reminded me of my own father who enjoyed linguistics, and employed a great voice to utilize the spoken language. It was almost musical. The epitome of language usage was here.
This was a class act. He was...

Christopher Buckley Won't Be Coming To The National Review Christmas Party
Christopher Buckley, the only son of William F. Buckley, came out recently with an endorsement for Barack Obama. This isn't sitting well with the National Review, but Buckley Jr. still owns 1/7 of the magazine. I caught up on Junior in this New York times piece. I learned that Buckley Jr. is the author of Thank You for Smoking--I have to admit I didn't read the book but I thought the movie was fabulous. Buckley is scheduled to appear on the Daily Show.
I watched Charlie Wilson's War last night--a nice Afgan/American history lesson in an easy-to-swallow Hollywood format starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. The director of Primary Colors tells the story of a Texas playboy congressman raises funds from $5 milllion to $1 billion to covertly arming the Afgans to fight the Soviets, then seen as the front of the Cold War. ...

Bravo, Christopher Buckley!
Christopher Buckley, son of William F Buckley, endorsed Obama the other day. He was promptly allowed to resign from the highly conservative National Review (which his father founded). He has also received thousands of hate letters from conservatives for his "betrayal" of the conservative movement, and his betrayal of John McCain. At the beginning of the campaign, Buckley had endorsed McCain, a friend since 1982.
But he found over the last few months a changed McCain. One who had let his defeat in 2000 change him profoundly. He found an angry man, willing to betray all principles to get elected. He questioned the judgement of a man who would select Sarah Palin as his running mate.
His endorsement came via The Daily Beast, not The National Review. He didn't feel it was appropriate to use a conservative forum to make his endorsement. In the end, it...
