Dog in a chest of drawersIt's late, I'm tired, and I am looking back on another weekend where I've run errands, done chores, and watched my son play lots of baseball. I love watching my son play baseball, but other than that, I really don't do much for myself. One of the things I am missing out on is going to the movies. I really don't have anyone to go to the movies with. My son used to want to go to the movies with me, but he is 13 now and would much rather go with his friends. Since I am going to be 43 quite soon, I've decided that I am old enough to go to the movies all by myself -- just like a big girl lol!

Last weekend, a jam-packed slate of eight new films opening or expanding nationwide flooded the multiplexes but it was a pampered little dog that ticket buyers wanted turning Disney's family comedy Beverly Hills Chihuahua into the box office king. Younger-skewing movies ruled the charts while an assortment of niche pics targeting specific audiences found some success elsewhere in the top ten. Three new films opening in over 1,000 theaters each failed to even make the top ten proving that the marketplace can only handle so much content. But the variety of product did lead ticket sales well ahead of year-ago levels starting October on a positive note.

With seven films making their wide release debuts (three of them outside the top ten), and led by those yapping canines, the box office grossed a whopping $91 million this weekend, surging past last year's comparable frame by 44%.

Disney's talking animal family comedy Beverly Hills Chihuahua was the perfect medicine to the continually dire financial news dominating the headlines this past week, as the PG-rated flick took in $29 million in its debut frame, averaging a very impressive $9,020 in 3,215 theaters. It was the biggest opening for a children's film since June's Wall-e (a Disney/Pixar release) opened with an impressive $63.1 million.
